St. Thomas students want Star Parker!

Who would like to see Star Parker on campus? Well, the St. Thomas Standard certainly would and the St. Thomas Students for Human Life agree: Bringing Star to St. Thomas would not only be beneficial for all who hear her, but also enjoyable, educational, and a wonderful inspiration to our Catholic university. On March 6, 2008, Margaret Cahill is presenting this wish of the St. Thomas Standard and the SHL to the Student Life Committee of St. Thomas.

As I helped my sister carry food and laundry up to her dorm room in Morrison Hall one cold, Sunday morning in December, I couldn't help but notice a large sign that a student had placed over his entire dorm room window. The student couldn't have lived in a better room to make a statement: His large picture window was located right next to the high traffic skyway/walkway area on the second level of Morrison Hall. The sign read: "Dear Board of Trustees, Just Stop It ... We WANT Nienstedt."

Confronting ethanol: A magic fuel or an inefficient gruel?

President Bush recently signed "The Energy Independence and Security Act" on Dec. 19, 2007. Included in this bill is a Renewable Fuels Standard insisting upon an increase in ethanol production nationwide from 6 billion gallons annually to 36 billion gallons annually by the year 2022, according to the American Coalition for Ethanol (ACE). Was this a wise decision? We can find out by examining whether or not ethanol, and not some other energy source, is a suitable substitute for petroleum energy/fuel.

Growing up as an African American in a low-income neighborhood and middle class family has historically implied you are a future member of the Democratic Party. For example, I spent most of my days as a child listening to widespread support for candidates such as Michael Dukakis and at every family celebration I still hear cries for the return of the Clinton Era. We are entering a new era and a growing number of African American voters' desire conservative government.

Military defense strengthened after successful missile launch

In a maneuver which received an incredulous amount of media attention, the US military successfully shot down a broken spy satellite in mid-February. Naturally, any activity which involves expenditures of tens of millions of dollars and an object flying into space is bound to receive media coverage, yet this incident was magnified as a political statement on the part of the US.

Imagine being surrounded by people from all over the United States and of all different ages who believe in and stand for the same ideas that you do. This is exactly where I found myself Feb.7-9, 2008. I was in Washington, D.C. for the American Conservative Union's 35th year to host the three-day Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) at the Omni Shoreham Hotel.

It has been half a decade since we started the St. Thomas Standard and the five years of its existence have been a great success. More students, alumni, staff and community members are finding out about our non-profit, non-partisan paper with each issue released: They are overjoyed to see that there is a forum on the St. Thomas campus that allows conservatives and Catholics to openly share their thoughts!

Fairness Doctrine: Are we losing freedom in the media?

Fair. What does it mean? If you look to Webster you will find something along the lines of, "free from bias, dishonesty, or injustice".
