It was late summer after my freshman year of high school. I had just returned home from a long canoe trip, and my mother was dropping me off at a friend’s house. I wore my sister’s white shorts because everyone knows that anything white accentuates tan skin, so I seized the opportunity to wear white clothing, seeing as it was a rare occasion for me.
I stepped out of the car and was immediately land-blasted by my mom, and not because I was showing off my tan skin. No, it was because I had two huge handprints on each of the butt cheeks of those white shorts. My response was in complete self-defense as I spewed out such phrases as “but they’re Annie’s” and “I’m only going to Courtney’s.” Regardless, I never lived that day down. In fact, to this day, the story still rings in my ears. Why, you so suspiciously ask? Why would such an inconsequential event from so long ago still be remembered? Everyone’s mom yells at them about such things and if not, such just furthers the argument that it does not matter, right?
Wrong.
Reasons for wearing such items of clothing (that is, clothing that magnifies certain parts of the female or male body purposely in order to gain that much more attention from men or women):
I want to express myself.
It is cute and stylish.
It is hot outside.
It is all I have to wear.
Reasons for NOT wearing such items of clothing:
It is degrading.
It objectifies women and men.
It is degrading.
It places a false sense of security and value on him or her.
It is degrading.
In response to:
“I want to express myself.”
The phrase “express myself” is highly overrated and is most commonly used to rationalize dressing a certain way that would otherwise be considered “slutty,” “revealing” or “provocative.” When someone chooses to express himself or herself it should be through writing or some similar method of mental stimulation as opposed to the physical stimulation of barely dressed men and women.
“It is cute and stylish.”
This excuse basically stresses the weak constitution of the majority of today’s society who either cannot resist such pressures or do not have the will to even consider something else. This lack of will displays a certain contempt for the capabilities of human beings. It is such a simple response that one would hardly dare to argue for it, but such is the subtle nature of vice.
“It is hot outside.”
I once heard a story about a girl who said this exact phrase to a woman and the woman responded: “Honey, hell is hotter.” Yes this sounds extreme but to those who claim to look at all sides of a situation, I strongly encourage some investigation of this point of view. There is more to it than “good people go to heaven and bad people go to hell.”
“It is all I have to wear:”
This is a lie.
In response to “Reasons for NOT wearing such items of clothing:”
Due to the synonymous nature of the reasons presented, I shall offer one conclusive response. Let us get down to the bones of the situation and not rationalize, shall we? This way we will look at the truth of the matter and not merely at what we would like to see.
The sexuality of the human being is a sacred gift from God which should be employed accordingly and with great, great care. Wearing provocative clothing such as shorts with handprints on them places a cheap value on the human person so subtle, that most people either choose to ignore it or honestly do not even think of the possibility. What kind of message does such clothing send? “Hi, please stare at my butt because that is where my worth lies, right there, right on the backside of my body, halfway down, sticking straight out with a crack down the middle.”
Wearing such things in today’s society also places a false sense of security on whoever initiates clothing styles and trends. The mentality prevails that as long as I do what everyone else does, I will be happy. This may not be what it seems like because you are “individualistic,” and do what you want, but as mentioned earlier, when you strip off all of those fluffy reasons and reach the heart of the situation, you will find this to be the truth.
When you think more about it, human beings really are not made to be completely independent; it is not in our nature. We need others, and most importantly we need God. This can be denied as much as possible, but you can also say that a rock is a fish. I am sorry, but the rock will forever remain a rock. Human beings will forever remain in need of God. We are imperfect, which explains our tendencies toward unhealthy habits. These unhealthy habits comprise such things as degradation of human sexuality which takes such forms as shorts with handprints on the butt.
There we are, right back at the beginning…
