Note from the Editor

by Amie Kieffer

It’s the holiday season and the snow is beginning to fall without reservation, as Christmas approaches us during this Advent. We are coming towards the celebration of Christ’s birth—and this is a time to prepare ourselves.

The Christmas lights, the decorations, the nativity scenes, the gift-buying, the cookie-making, the lighting of the Advent wreath, the holiday specials on television, the Christmas songs on the radio, the snow covering the earth—these are all things that we see around us—things we soak in at this time of year and warm us up like a nice cup of hot cocoa.

The feelings we get from this time of year due to our blissful and joyous surroundings often bring an inner change within us as well. It’s hard not to think of others during this time of year—others less fortunate; friends you may have not spoken to in a long time; family that has passed away.

It’s a reflective time of year and with the new year right around the corner, it is a time that offers hope. Resolutions are about to be made and another semester of classes is in front of many of us. But, regardless of where we are going it is good to take this time of year and any break we are granted from our usual duties and work, to reflect.

I hope this issue of the St. Thomas Standard offers something to everyone, whether it comes from reflecting on Maria Rode’s article on the 12 days of Christmas, or John Gummerson’s article that takes a thoughtful look at the impact of our ideas upon society in regard to minimum wage, or Kelsey Askwith’s awe and consideration of the differences between Church involvement here and where she is now—Rome.

Thank you for taking the time to reflect on what these students have to say and I encourage you to write in if you would like to express something further in regard to anything written.

The St. Thomas Standard wishes you all the very best in the coming new year and congratulations to those of you graduating! Merry Christmas, St. Thomas!
