It has been half a decade since we started the St. Thomas Standard and the five years of its existence have been a great success. More students, alumni, staff and community members are finding out about our non-profit, non-partisan paper with each issue released: They are overjoyed to see that there is a forum on the St. Thomas campus that allows conservatives and Catholics to openly share their thoughts!

When you entered St. Thomas as a freshman, you were undoubtedly aware that it is a Catholic school with an esteemed reputation for educating tomorrow's future leaders and professionals. Knowing that St. Thomas is a Catholic School, it would make sense for you to assume-regardless of your religious beliefs-that students would be able to openly express conservative, Catholic views at St. Thomas. Surprisingly then, many students have come to realize that our university's own student newspaper, The Aquin, consists of predominately liberal viewpoints.

St. Thomas is a great place to learn; it is a great place to make friends; it is a beautiful campus; and there are many great teachers, classes, and opportunities here! I would encourage anyone looking at colleges and universities in Minnesota to look at St. Thomas because I know it is a wonderful school and that I have truly enjoyed my four years here.

While St. Thomas is certainly not an oppressive school, if you are expecting the existing student newspaper to match up with the ideals of the school's founder, John Ireland; the very ideals many alumni wish to see when they support this school; the ideals students like Jordan Crow wish to see alive on campus as discussed in this issue of the St. Thomas Standard, then your expectations will not be met. Perhaps, over time this will change, but if you are looking for freedom of expression and searching to hear, read, and write about conservative or Catholic ideas, you need look no further. The St. Thomas Standard is bringing them back!

Are you reading a copy of this paper? Do you want to find it online along with past issues, the history of the paper, information about events and more? Simply go to www.conservativestudentnews.org or www.stthomasstandard.org and you will have it all before you instantly!

Publishing the St. Thomas Standard newspaper is not the only thing Conservative Student News Inc. does. Not only are we teaming up with the St. Thomas Students for Human Life and the Young America's Foundation (YAF) in an effort to bring Star Parker to campus, the St. Thomas Standard will also be hosting conservative radio personality, Jason Lewis, at the Town and Country Club on Thursday, April 17, 2008 at 7:00 pm. Students interested in attending the Jason Lewis event must register with Katie Kieffer in advance by emailing her at: katiekieffer@conservativestudentnews.com. Registered students will get in free with their student ID. Seating is very limited, so be sure to register early. A limited number of public tickets are also available for $30 each.

Please feel free to send any questions or comments you may have in regard to the St Thomas Standard, its content, or if you would simply like to get involved to stthomasstandard@yahoo.com!
