Note from the Editor

by Amie Kieffer

You never really know what life’s going to throw at you.  You never know until you live and find out.  Whether life throws us cotton candy or the stick it is made on—lessons will be learned from the way we react.

To a great extent, humans are shaped by their experiences.  In this issue we have several people sharing their experiences, from their time doing field work with the Leadership Institute to coaching hockey to recovering from car accidents!

If “gangsta” rappers are so tough and wise about the ways of the world, why can’t they come up with better stage-names for themselves? Am I really supposed to take someone named “Fitty Cent” seriously? How much credibility does a guy who gets his inspiration from pocket change really deserve? Frankly, you have to sound like a crap salesman with a mouthful of samples in order to pronounce that ridiculous name “correctly!”

St. Paul, MN: Mayor Chris Coleman and his gang of lawmakers on the St. Paul City Council have recently proposed a new ordinance that bans public displays of toy guns.

No one came forward to oppose the ordinance at a public hearing on Feb. 21, 2007 so it was read at the Feb. 28 City Council meeting, and the law goes into effect 30 days after the published change.

Katie Jetland is a senior at St. Thomas. She is the goalie and captain of the St. Thomas Woman’s Hockey Team.

Who inspired you most during your time playing hockey at St. Thomas?
Every year that I have been a part of St. Thomas hockey I have been greatly inspired by each senior class. While the make-up of the girls is different, there is the common realization of every senior that their last (official) days of hockey are drawing near. The passion and the enthusiasm they play with their last year is truly inspirational.

The United States government has maintained a winning structure of law and order in which individuals, subject to the forces of a competitive marketplace, can pursue their own self-interest and happiness. Since the Great Depression, however, politicians’ unchecked interpretation of the Constitution regarding official policy in domestic affairs has resulted in a large growth in government.
