Killing the Environment with Birth Control

by Amie Kieffer

Should one be affected by birth control pills if they never chose to use them? What if someone didn't even know what they were-they were just a creature trying to live, produce, and give birth-the way they were made to? Would you like it if birth control started changing you, impacting your sexuality, and polluting your environment?!

Did you do your taxes this year? If you answered "no," be thankful that you put it off for one more year. If your answer is "yes," please, accept my heartfelt condolences for having had to waste hours of your life.

Should Imus have been fired?

by Peter Johnson

Don Imus has been a polarizing figure in America for over 30 years. He made well publicized comments on April 4th, calling the Rutgers women's basketball team "nappy-headed hos" among other racist things. These statements eventually led to his ouster from his WNBC radio show in New York as well as the MSNBC television simulcast of his show.

F.I.R.E, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, is an organization dedicated to defending the rights of individuals in higher learning. Often F.I.R.E defends the liberties of conservative students being repressed within the walls of liberal academia. I became familiar with F.I.R.E through a Leadership Institute training workshop a couple of years ago; while I found their organization to be very impressive, I hoped I would never need their services.

"The darker forces at the fringe of the map smell weakness and defeatism at the heart of the west." This was one phrase that really stuck out for me as I sat in the 3M auditorium listening to Mark Steyn. Don't get me wrong, the event wasn't all about how America is alone and dark times are ahead for us. Steyn kept the atmosphere loose and fun with his humorous stories and jokes. He was well received, signing books and posing for pictures in what seemed to be quite a successful first visit to St. Thomas.

"Hey, come check this out!" was the enthusiastic greeting I received as I walked through my friend Libby's bedroom door. She motioned me over to her desk where she was sitting and pointed to her computer screen. On it I found a website playing a trailer for the hottest, "new" method of self-improvement.

Government Regulations and the Free Market: NYC’s Rent Control

by Steven Daly

Government has the ability to regulate markets in this country. They often do so with the best of intentions. The idea is to protect those who could not otherwise afford a certain product, which is usually a necessary good. The problem is that these government regulations often, if not always, hurt the exact people in which they intend to help.

Alumni Spotlight: Road Racing with David Daly

So David, tell me a little bit about your passion for road racing. How did you get into it?

My dad is the reason for my involvement. He was involved in circle track racing for 15 years prior and now has been in road racing for the past 10 years. It's purely a hobby for him. He also operates Luther Westside Volkswagen, which is our main sponsor. I've been around cars for as long as I can remember: As a kid I would spend tons of time at the shop with my dad. I'd watch the mechanics and went to every race.

Freedom of Speech reigns from O'Donnell to Coulter

by Amie Kieffer

Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing! It may lead to outbursts and fraudulent abuses of courtesy at times, but all in all, everyone benefits from living in a country where one can actually speak one's mind and hear others do so as well.

Note from the Editor

by Amie Kieffer

It's the end of the year and most of you are probably patting yourselves on the back and silently or not so silently screaming exclamations of joy and excitement for the summer. Even if you are going to be working, taking a summer class or two, or both-summer is summer and you would have a hard time finding a Minnesotan who is not excited for welcoming in some warm weather, lots of green, and plenty of sun.
